See you next fall…
Monday, September 24th, 2007I knew I had at least five people reading this comic (okay, MAYBE six) but browsing through my web statistics, trying to figure out how many readers I do have (final conclusion… I have no idea what any of these statistics mean), I found I’d been linked to a French blog! I was surprised, nay, honored… until I used Babel Fish to translate the page…
“The NolansĀ : a family of geeks - perhaps my webcomic preferred”
Now, I’m amazed that my comic would be preferred by anyone, much less someone not native to our country, but… “a family of geeks”? Unless “geek” is “cool” these days. I’m not sure. You kids and your constantly changing lingo, and your colored chalk and your hula hoops, and your dancing to the No Doubts…
Seriously though, I think it’s awesome that my comic is actually being read in other countries. It might just bump my readership up to SEVEN!

Maybe all of your readers should just sound off here. It’ll be easier to read these posts than reading web stats.
And it’s somewhat chic right now to identify yourself as a geek. There’s a whole website devoted to “geeky” stuff. It’s Think Geek or something. My friend keeps raving about it.

Well uh, the dad is wearing glasses, hmm… the mom plays videogames…
Plus I cringe a bit to think how long it must have taken to draw all those leaves.

Present! Actually was around for the old comic.

Hello,
I want to give some precision about what I’ve written on my blog.
At the moment, I wanted to give a short description to all my readers… “geek” is a good definition here in France, because this word has taken a wider signification, and tends to become a false friend…
Average people here call “geek” any person more or less involved in computer science or gaming. This term seems good for this webcomic…
I agree that “geek” (given the “real” definition) is not “cool”, and I don’t like this usage of the term… But languages evolve, and we should admit evolution even if it doesn’t please us…
Anyway, I really like the Nolans, and some of my friends really appreciate this kind of humour, when I give them links to some strips.

Well, I’ve been a geek pretty much all my life:
1. I’ve always been a sucker for learning about the latest electronic gadget. (Even if I couldn’t afford to actually *buy* it…)
2. I can program pretty much any VCR — even without the manual! (No blinking *12:00* for me! No sir!)
3. I can disassemble, repair and reassemble most simple mechanical devices from memory.
4. I taught myself how to operate both Windows *and* Macintosh computers (and I can tell you from experience that I *much* prefer Macs…), and I generally prefer to learn applications without using the manual. (Those things may be written by geeks for geeks, but; for me at least; there’s nothing like getting down-and-dirty with a keyboard and mouse and actually *learning* the program.)

Do multiple personalities count towards readership? If so, I think I can get you into double-digits!
Gotta add, nothing wrong with being a geek. Raise your Wiimotes high and wear your Optimus Prime t-shirt with pride.

It’s amazing watching words travel across cultures and take on new meanings.

Heh, I’ve been following Mr. N since 1998 and his old Pokemon website. I’m just not very vocal. Working hard on becoming a diehard fan.
Keep up the good word, Josh. You’ve got at least one fan since childhood (still waiting for a Josh Nickerson action figure).

Don’t worry, Yeiazel, I’m just goofin’ around.
Thanks for reading everyone!

Well, geek does have a less negative connotation these days than it had previously. I really don’t have much trouble with calling myself a geek.
As for the Nolans, I would have to say that the geek factor has actually dropped since your original airing of it (which I wish you would re-upload btw). Now that Sarah and Josh are portrayed as younger children and Steve and Pat have been developed more it really has more of the feel a traditonal newspaper comic. Still nice, though I still miss the old style from time to time.

I am still here. ^^ It’s been a week since I was on to check it though, so my apologies for the lateness.

…”ld” is supposed to be “old”
