You’d think that those so-called “grown-ups” on the School Board would be intelligent enough to institute a pre-payment plan *specifically* to avoid this problem…or that, at very least, they’d designate a Vice-Principal and some Teachers to provide Security in the halls between classes. Idiots!

I always wonder why kids who are assualted like this don’t go to the police. That’s what the job of the police is to do after all - if nothing else, follow the bigger kid after school with a baseball bat, heh - make sure it doesn’t happen again to him or anyone else.

Believe it or not (and I speak from actual experience here), Police tend to be very reluctant to pursue criminal cases against bullies — even those involving physical assault — because they view potential witnesses (usually other children) as unreliable. Also, they tend to view anything short of a Columbine-style massacre that happens on school grounds (other than, say, vandalism or arson against school property) as the responsiblity of the school’s own administration. A third reason is that many departments feel that they’d be open to harrassment lawsuits if they tried to *prevent* bullying without any ironclad evidence that it was actually occuring. (Bruises and stitches not withstanding…) And don’t forget that, as a Juvenile, his tormenter will be treated with kid gloves and, as in my own case, may even try to exploit the situation by blaming his parents (or even his victim) for his behavior. As you can see, poor Josh would have a pretty steep road ahead of him if he tried to bring in any official law “enforcement”. Perhaps he should consider taking Martial Arts classes…

Geez, guys, it’s just a gag. *L*
Also, I’m surprised no one’s caught the reference to this strip yet.

The problem is that, having both been on the receiving end of a bully’s attentions *and* unsuccessful in getting any kind of help in stopping those attentions for the reasons laid out in my second post, bullies and bullying are a bit of a personal sore spot for me. I don’t particularly mind if you use it as the basis for humor (I haven’t *totally* lost my own sense of humor, I would hope), but I *would* ask that you remember that it can have very serious Real World consequences (including the above-mentioned Columbine incident) and that bullies can inflict some real, painful scars. (Both physical *and* mental.)

It’s Kim Possible, right Josh?
Another thing about Bullying is that there is the general idea of bullies and being bullied that parents of both parties and other parents believe is a “part of growing up” and therefore will actually refrain from helping out even if asked directly. This fact is sometimes what bullies count on in order to continue bullying activity, because they know that even if the grown ups get involved, the most we’ll tell them to do is “try to avoid him” or “learn how to defend/stand up for yourself.” Event his has bad consequences, simply because it will lead to more violence and if the bullied kid is much smaller and younger, he might think he needs a weapon just to even the field a little bit.
My older bro got a lot of crap from some bullies and actually took the initiative to defend himself once and lost the fight against 3 guys. The Vice Principal in charge of doling out corrections actually found my brother at fault and suspended him while the other guys got nothing. The wrong decision indeed, but even if justice was meted out in that fashion, a suspension would only increase the animosity between them no matter who got it. The key to stopping bullying is early intervention in the kindergarten up to 5th grades, nipping it in the bud as soon as signs present themselves. A couple of school districts int he U.S. do this and have record low bullying instances.
